A Symposium
Tartu, June 5th, 2018
Carvings in the Chapter House of York Minster (13th century)
Places are far more than geographical locations; they are sites of memories and venues for extraordinary encounters in storytelling. This constitutes the topic for a symposium which will be held at the University of Tartu, Estonia. The purpose is to shed light on the narrative construction of places, landscapes and their supernatural dimensions, and the spatial conditions for encounters with the supernatural as they are manifested in European folklore and in early sources, such as the Old Norse sagas. The symposium is arranged in connection with the release of the volume Storied and Supernatural Places: Studies in Spatial and Social Dimensions of Folklore and Sagas.
