Pre-Modern Seminar No 17: Jüri Talvet

On Monday October 29th prof Jüri Talvet will give a talk called:

“The European Baroque: Some Considerations, 25 Years Later”

The seminar will take place in the library of Skandinavistika (Ülikooli 17, 3rd floor, room 305) at 18.15.

Jüri has sent us a short presentation of the lecture:

“In my seminar talk, I will rely as the point of departure on my lengthy essay “Immobility and Dynamics of the Baroque”, published in English in the series “Studia metrica et poetica” of the Proceedings of Tartu University (780: Poeetiliste süsteemide dünaamika; Tartu, 1987, pp. 3-27). In Estonian, the same was published in my book Hispaania vaim (Tartu: Ilmamaa, 1995). I will try to discuss critically my own ideas about the main philosophical, aesthetic as well as ideological features of the European Baroque, especially in the light of my posterior reading and research (combined with translation) of some major works of European Baroque literature (thus, Calderón’s Life is a Dream and The Great Theatre of the World, Tirso de Molina’s The Trickster of Seville, Gracián’s Manual Oracle).“

Everybody is welcome!
