Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel visited the University of Tartu

On October 28-29, Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel visited Tallinn and Tartu. At the University of Tartu Rector of the UT Volli Kalm and Honorary Consul of Sweden in Tartu Madis Kanarbik welcomed the Royal Couple.

The aim of the visit to Estonia was to increase cultural, economic and environmental cooperation between Estonia and Sweden.

On the second day of the visit, on 29 October, they visited Ericsson Eesti AS. After that they went to Tartu. In Tartu the royal couple attended the ceremony of handing over the ethnographic collections of the Nordic Museum, and they participated in the ethnographic design seminar in the Estonian National Museum. They will also meet the members of the Estonian Students’ Society in Tartu.

At 4.15 p.m., the royal couple proceeded to the visit to the University of Tartu where they were received by the rector Professor Volli Kalm and Madis Kanarbik, Honorary Consul of Sweden in Tartu. The delegation visited the University of Tartu Art Museum, and thereafter there was a meeting with the royal couple in the assembly hall.

After the greeting of Volli Kalm and brief introduction of the University of Tartu, Jevgeni Ossinovski, the Minister of Education and Research of the Republic of Estonia, made a short presentation “Estonia as a Knowledge and Research Nation”. Helene Hellmark Knutsson, the Minister for Higher Education and Research of Sweden, proceeded with the speech “Sweden as a Knowledge and Research Nation”, and finally, Daniel Sävborg, Professor of Scandinavian Studies, spoke about the history and current situation of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Tartu.

After the presentations, the Crown Princess spoke to the pupils and students who had come there and who are studying Swedish and/ or culture of Sweden. (Look at the pictures and the video of the visit).
