Starting Monday, you can study at night in the library once again
The first week of the traditional night library will take place this year from 9 to 13 December, when students can study in the library until midnight. In January, you can visit the night library for three weeks.

The Juri Lotman Scholarship Competition 2025: Call for applicants among semioticians and Slavic philologists
The Juri Lotman Fund announces its scholarship contest for graduate students from the University of Tartu, whose research carries on the tradition of Lotman and his school in semiotics and Slavic philology. In 2025, two scholarships of €600 each will be awarded: one to a master’s or doctoral student specialising in Slavic philology and another in semiotics and cultural theory. Submissions for the competition are expected by January 27, 2025. The grantees will be disclosed on Juri Lotman’s birthday, 28 February 2025.

This year’s recipients of honorary decorations have been announced
On 25 October, the University of Tartu senate decided to award the University of Tartu Grand Medal to Professor of International Business Urmas Varblane. Also, the recipients of the University of Tartu Star of Appreciation, Medal, Badge of Distinction and the decoration “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu” have been announced.

In the summer, two large book donations were made to the University of Tartu Library, adding to its existing collection of books on the classical and early modern periods.

On 20-21 November, a short course on building competences for transdisciplinary collaboration will be held at the University of Tartu Library.

Statistics masterclass on Bayesian regression to be held in October
From 21 to 24 October, Natalia Levshina from Radboud University will conduct a statistics masterclass covering Bayesian statistics with a focus on language data. The event includes both theoretical and practical sessions.

Information session for starting international students of the Faculty
The first weeks at the university bring new acquaintances, new buildings, a new daily schedule and, of course, a lot of new knowledge. To organize the first weeks and the rest of the studies better, we have put together an information session on the most important topics, where first-year students can find out how to navigate the university.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites you to autumn fair to celebrate start of new academic year
For the second year in a row, volunteers from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities are organising an eco-friendly fair that offers everything sustainable. This enables reusing a wide range of consumer goods in addition to delighting fairgoers with farm, garden and forest products. The fair will take place in the courtyard of Philosophicum on 3 September at 12:00–16:00. You can register to sell your goods until 30 August.

Information Technology Office invites you to try the IT helpdesk virtual assistant
Starting from 16 August, all staff and students of the university will be able to test the virtual assistant on the University of Tartu IT wiki page, which will provide support in solving IT problems based on existing guides. The trial period will last a couple of months, during which the Information Technology Office will be able to assess the quality of the virtual assistant service.
The exhibition “Missing” sheds light on the dark side of biodiversity – the extinction of species
On Friday, 23 August, at 17:00, the art exhibition “Missing” will open at the Tartu Art House, displaying contemporary artworks made from 40-million-year-old bones.
