The English language proficiency test consists of four parts:
  • Reading Comprehension (40 min)
  • Listening Comprehension (30 min)
  • Language Structures (35 min)
  • Speaking (5-10 minutes per person)

The construction is similar to the CAE test, but our test is shorter and does not contain the writing part. Preparations materials, exercises and examples are available at Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

Free test: only available for students of the University of Tartu on the condition that the test is needed for applying for a scholarship and similar, which must include the involvement of the DAAD (including Erasmus+). The test will take place once a semester and only when at least five people have the interest to take part.

The following conditions apply:

  • The test is a C-test called onSET; it is possible to inform yourself about onSET on the official website.
  • The test must be taken in person - there is no online version (esp. important during the pandemic)
  • The free test must not only be for any scholarship but for a scholarship involving the DAAD (including ERASMUS); NB! Other organizations may have their own tests or only recognise tests that are in written form (such as the onSET test)
  • The test is usually conducted once or twice a semester; it is usually at least conducted once shortly before the deadlines of the DAAD scholarships (so no one will be without a test).

If a student needs a German test on very short notice, we recommend considering the test of the Goethe Institute organised in cooperation with the Deutsche Kulturinstitut Tallinn. The tests are lengthy, cover a large range of language skills, and the institute offers a lot of appointments/time slots. The same tests are also available for non-students.
