Turn your passion for languages and cultures into a profession

International students can now apply to the European Languages and Cultures master’s programme at the University of Tartu. The applications are due on 15 March 2025.

You can choose between seven specialities: Classical philology, English language and literature, French language and literature, German language and literature, Russian and Slavic philology, Scandinavian languages and literature, and Spanish language and literature.

To apply, you need to submit a motivation letter and an essay on a given topic along with your application in DreamApply. The essay topics will be published on the curriculum website on 15 February 2025 (see the admission requirements). Do not worry if you have not graduated yet – students who will complete their bachelor's degree by the summer of 2025 are also welcome to apply.

The programme is flexible and allows you to combine elective courses and practical training according to your career interests. Thus, students with different interests can take very different paths. You can also take advantage of international mobility across Europe and beyond. In addition, if you are specialising in French language and literature or Russian and Slavic philology, you have a unique opportunity to spend a year studying in Lyon. This exciting exchange allows you to earn a master’s degree from both Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University in France and the University of Tartu at the same time.

During your studies, you will gain expertise in intercultural communication, develop your language skills and gain in-depth knowledge of the modern or classical cultures. After graduation, you can pursue diverse career paths as a cultural mediator in state institutions, universities, embassies, private companies, museums, publishing houses, etc.
