Autumn brings crisp Nordic culture to Tartu

From September to December, you can enjoy Icelandic, Faroese and Greenlandic languages, literature, films, music and art in Tartu.

The more populous Scandinavian countries often overshadow the island countries of the Nordic region. Therefore, the Department of Scandinavian Studies will dedicate the autumn of 2023 to these regions. Throughout autumn, numerous events will bring the hidden gems of these regions to Tartu - the European Capital of Culture 2024. The programme is updated continuously, but several events are already confirmed.

Students can take part in a course introducing Icelandic, Faroese and Greenlandic languages, taught by local and visiting lecturers. Non-students are welcome to attend public lectures, which occur once a month from September to November, and where our guest lecturers give an overview of the current language situation in these regions.

Everyone is also welcome to the "Wonderful Island" photo exhibition by Elle Mets. The exhibition is free, and you can admire the enchanting nature views in the gallery of the Lossi 3 building until September 17.

On gloomy September evenings, film enthusiasts can watch the Faroese film "Skál" (2021) and the Icelandic film "Breathe calmly" (2018) at the Elektriteater. In late autumn, there will be a concert by the Faroese singer Lea Kampmann.

The programme is organised by the Department of Scandinavian Studies of Tartu University in collaboration with the Icelandic-based SNU, which promotes the teaching of Nordic languages and Cultures abroad, and the Nordic Council of Ministers, which maintains and develops the cooperation between Nordic countries and has been a good partner of the Department of Scandinavian Studies throughout the years.
