A public statement to end war in Ukraine was made at Lotman's congress

Yesterday was the final day of the centenary congress "Juri Lotman's Semiosphere". During the public ceremony held at the University of Tartu, the delegates of the congress made a public statement to end war in Ukraine. The statement was published in three languages: Estonian, English and Russian.
 

Meie, rahvusvahelise teaduskongressi „Juri Lotmani semiosfäär“ osalised, 37 erinevast riigist, sealhulgas Venemaalt ja Ukrainast, nõuame viivitamatult Ukraina-vastase sõjalise tegevuse peatamist.

Maailmakuulus teadlane Juri Lotman sündis Venemaal täpselt 100 aastat tagasi ning töötas suurema osa elust Tartu Ülikoolis professorina. Ta oli teise maailmasõja veteran ja nägi oma silmadega selle sõja õudusi. 

Lotman mõtiskles palju ajaloo ennustamatuse üle: ajaloo kulg näib ettemääratuna vaid tagasivaatavalt, kuid tegelikult on selles „pöördelisi hetki“, mil sündmuste käigu otsustavad inimeste vaba valik ja koosmeelsed teod. Täna on üks neist hetkedest, mil meie solidaarsusest, kõigi rahvaste tahtest, sõltuvad paljud ajaloolised saatused: iseseisva demokraatliku arengutee valinud Ukraina saatus; Venemaa saatus, mille rahvas väärib paremat kui agressorriigi häbiväärne maine; kogu maailma saatus, mis peaks kiiresti kustutama sõjatulekahju ja takistama selle levikut teistesse riikidesse.

Meie, humanitaarteadlased, kutsume üles tegema kõik, et see veresaun peatada. Meil endil lasub vastutus selle ees, millise tuleviku me valime.

We, the participants of the International congress Juri Lotman’s Semiosphere, from 37 different countries including Russia and Ukraine, demand the immediate cessation of the war against Ukraine.

The internationally renowned academic Juri Lotman was born in Russia exactly 100 years ago, and for most of his life, he worked as a professor at the University of Tartu in Estonia. He was a veteran of World War II and saw the horrors of that war with his own eyes.

Lotman thought a lot about the unpredictability of history: the course of history seems deterministic only in retrospect, whereas in fact there are “momentous moments” when the course of events is determined by people’s free choices and cooperative actions. Today is one of those moments when many historical destinies depend on our solidarity, on the will of all nations: the fate of Ukraine which chose the independent path of democracy; the fate of Russia whose people deserve more than the shameful reputation of an aggressor nation; the fate of the entire world, which should quickly douse the flames of war and prevent its spread into other countries.

We, the scholars in the humanities, call on everyone to do everything possible to stop this bloodshed. It is upon ourselves that the responsibility lies on what kind of a future we will choose.

Мы, участники научного конгресса «Семиосфера Юрия Лотмана», из 37 стран, включая Россию и Украину, требуем от российских властей немедленного прекращения военных действия против Украины.

Всемирно известный ученый Юрий Михайлович Лотман родился в России ровно 100 лет назад, был профессором Тартуского университета и ветераном Второй мировой войны, своими глазами видевшим ее ужасы. 

Он много размышлял о непредсказуемости истории: ее ход кажется предрешённым лишь при ретроспективном взгляде, а в настоящем, в «минуты роковые», все решают согласные действия свободных людей. Сегодня один из таких моментов, когда от нашей солидарности, от воли всех народов зависят многие исторические судьбы: судьба Украины, избравшей независимый демократический путь развития; судьба России, чей народ достоин лучшего, чем позорная репутация страны-агрессора; судьба всего мира, который должен скорее потушить разгоревшийся военный пожар и не дать ему перекинуться на другие страны.

Мы, ученые-гуманитарии, призываем сделать все, чтобы остановить побоище. На нас лежит ответственность за выбор нашего будущего.
