Latvian week in Tartu

The 11th of November is Lāčplēsis Day, the day of the bear killer, and it also is the first day of the Latvian week held in Tartu this year. In addition to the annual event of commemorating Latvian soldiers and war refugees at Uus-Jaani cemetery, the Latvian association "Tērbata" together with the Estonian Ministry of Culture and the Latvian embassy have organised a whole week of festivities for everyone interested in finding out more about Latvian culture.

The week includes a visit to the Baltic Defence College, the opening of the exhibition "Red rays" by Agnes Liping, performances of the young Latvians dance groups Spārni and Jumītis from Liepāja at the Estonian National Museum, a concert by the band Manta at the bar Edison and a glimpse into folk music at the river cafe "Sisevete Saatkond" by the Latvian-Finnish duett PerkHell.

Those who have a deeper interest in Latvian language and culture can learn about Latvian folk songs and ancient signs in a workshop of traditional folk culture. Moreover, everyone has the opportinity to meet Guntars Godiņš, who has translated aremarkamble amount of Estonian literature into Latvian, and accompaning him is the Estonian poet Contra, who has translated the poetry of Eduards Veidenbaums into Estonian and recently published the book "My Latvia".

The events take place in Latvian, Estonian and also English.
