The seminar takes place from 8 to 10 June 2026 in Tartu, and welcomes PhD projects about cities or rural spaces, as well as those that use spatial categories metaphorically or analytically (e.g. center-periphery dynamics in media, discourse, or cultural production).
The seminar focuses on methodological and categorisation issues faced by many doctoral researchers (particularly, but not exclusively, in the humanities). It will zoom in on linguistic landscaping and city translation methods from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on available expertise in translation studies, sociolinguistics, and intercultural communication.
The event will be held in English. Participants will be encouraged to engage actively and reflect critically on spatial, linguistic, and cultural categories, for example, through a hands-on linguistic landscaping exercise in Tartu.
The maximum number of participants is 15. An important selection criterion is the answer to the motivation questions in the registration form (Reason for applying to the seminar and the expected benefits from this research seminar)
The event is organised by the Estonian Doctoral School for Humanities and Arts.
