International students can apply to the master's programme in European Languages and Cultures at the University of Tartu. Tuition is free for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and permanent residents. The applications are due on 15 March 2026.
It is possible choose between seven specialities: Classical philology, English language and literature, French language and literature, German language and literature, Russian and Slavic philology, Scandinavian languages and literature, and Spanish language and literature.
The applicants must submit a motivation letter and an essay on a given topic along with their application in DreamApply. The essay topics are published on the curriculum website (see the admission requirements). Do not worry if you have not graduated yet – students who will complete their bachelor's degree in the spring or summer of 2026 are also welcome to apply.
The programme is flexible, allowing you to combine elective courses and practical training according to your career interests. Thus, students with different interests can take very different paths. You can also take advantage of international mobility across Europe and beyond. During your studies, you will gain expertise in intercultural communication, develop your language skills and gain in-depth knowledge of the modern or classical cultures. After graduation, you can pursue diverse career paths as a cultural mediator in state institutions, universities, embassies, private companies, museums, and publishing houses.
