Study programmes
The undergraduate (BA) programmes all require a good command of the Estonian language, but the postgraduate programmes (MA and PhD) are welcome international applicants.
The European Languages and Cultures master's programme trains students to be cultural mediators (translators, administrators, editors, etc.) by providing knowledge and skills in a modern or classical language and culture. You can choose one of the following specialities:
- Classical philology
- English language and literature
- French language and literature
- German language and literature
- Russian and Slavic philology
- Scandinavian languages and literature
- Spanish language and literature

The Foreign language teacher and Translation studies MA programmes require a good knowledge of Estonian.
Double degree with Lyon
The students of the specialities French language and literature and Russian and Slavic Philology have the opportunity to acquire a master’s degree from the Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University in France and from the University of Tartu at the same time.
3 Rectors' scholarship for speakers of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian
In autumn 2017, the Rectors' Scholarship was established by the rectors of the University of Tartu, the University of Latvia and Vilnius University to promote the learning and teaching of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian language and culture. The scholarship competition is open for all full-time students (including visiting students) of any curricula at the three universities. Applicants must know one of the Baltic countries’ languages (Estonian, Latvian or Lithuanian) at least at C1 level and the other two languages at least at A2 level. The amount of the annual scholarship is 2000 euros.
